Group urges FDA to push for unique device ID system

The Advancing Patient Safety Coalition sent a letter to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg calling for the agency to work on regulations that would lead to the implementation of a unique device notification system for medical devices. The UDI system would help monitor adverse events and prevent the implantation of faulty, recalled or fake devices in patients, according to the coalition, which is composed of consumer groups, physicians and hospitals.
