Weight gain after smoking cessation raises diabetes risk in older women

Although quitting smoking reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, weight gain following smoking cessation was associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in postmenopausal women, according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Researchers also found that women who gained more than 11 pounds following smoking cessation did not see the same cardiovascular benefits of quitting.
