Why CNN's Twitter firing was a dumb move

CNN has fired senior editor Octavia Nasr after she sent out a tweet calling a deceased Hezbollah official a "giant" and saying she was sad he'd died. That's a dumb, spineless decision, writes Harvard professor Stephen Walt, who argues that firing a 20-year veteran over a 140-character tweet is excessive. "Nasr is correct to have expressed regret for having tweeted on a subject that requires more nuance, but her firing will only reinforce the simplistic stereotypes that already prevail in mainstream political commentary," Walt writes.
