Why you should stop looking for outside investors

Fewer than 3% of startups won financing from a venture capital firm, strategic investor, friend or family member, according to the Census Bureau's latest Survey of Business Owners. Given those odds, entrepreneurs shouldn't waste their most precious resource -- time -- trying to track down external equity, writes Scott Shane. He suggests business-plan tweaks entrepreneurs can make so they can avoid seeking outside investors.
