Will Congress re-examine Title I funding formula?

Two lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives are reintroducing a proposal to refocus the formula for distributing Title I funds to school districts that considers concentration of poverty within a district. The measure, which is receiving support from some rural and education groups, could be considered as part of the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act in the House. However, opponents say the changes would reduce funding for a disproportionate number of large urban school districts, and would complicate the renewal of the education law.
