Column: EU's passenger rights go beyond those in the U.S.

The European Union requires airlines to cover the cost of hotel rooms and meals for passengers when their flights are canceled or delayed. If the problem is the carrier's fault, it must pay penalties as high as about $750. The law applies to any EU carrier flying to or from Europe as well as American airlines flying from the EU.
