Singer's illness raises awareness of cardiomyopathy

Country singer Randy Travis' battle with cardiomyopathy has cast a spotlight on a life-threatening condition that is unfamiliar to many Americans. Many patients remain unaware of the condition unless symptoms become severe and cause fatigue and shortness of breath, said Dr. Thierry H. Le Jemtel of the Tulane Heart and Vascular Institute. Travis, who remains in critical condition after suffering a subsequent stroke, underwent implantation of a left ventricular assist device.
