The Department of Energy this week said Mattoon, Ill., is an environmentally fit location for an experimental carbon capture and sequestration coal-fired plant. The DOE's decision will allow it to work with developers of the project on the construction of the plant. Developers will eventually present a preliminary design, cost estimate and funding plan. Last month, DOE committed $1 billion to build the plant. The FutureGen Alliance will need to find $2.4 billion for the rest of the cost.
