New registration rules for human testing are announced in China

Medical studies involving human subjects, especially those concerned with surgical technology and food safety, must be registered with a sponsoring institution, according to a new rule issued by China's National Health and Family Planning Commission that seeks to ensure that ethical standards are maintained in these studies. Clinical drug trials are already subject to similar regulations. "[A] balance should be struck between protecting the rights of trial volunteers and the long-term goal of advancing science and technology," said Zhai Xiaomei of the commission's medical ethics committee.
