Why political science research is important

Harvard University professor Robert D. Putnam in this opinion article notes that funding from the National Science Foundation was critical to the success of influential research he began early in his career. "[I]f the recent amendment by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) that restricts NSF funding for political science had been in effect when I began this research, it never would have gotten off the ground," writes Putnam, who has been awarded a National Humanities Medal.
