Environmental-risk management can help fracking be safer

Advances in hydraulic fracturing technology and increased disclosure of chemical components used in fracking may be making the practice safer, but further action is necessary, writes Richard Liroff, founder and executive director of the Investor Environmental Health Network. "Energy companies must not only acknowledge that public concern is legitimate, but also not wait for regulators to mandate action," Liroff writes. The industry needs "a combination of key performance indicators and best management practices," he adds.
