European cities use street-lamp system to conserve energy

A system invented by Dutch designer Chintan Shah is beginning to produce major energy savings and reductions in carbon dioxide emissions for European cities by fully lighting street lamps only when people or vehicles are present. Other uses for the Tvilight system are envisioned, including street lamps that flash warnings on the approach of emergency vehicles, as well as more fanciful and decorative applications, according to this CNN report.
