Steady rise in EU patent activity seen in medtech over 10 years

An annual report from the European Patent Office reveals that the medtech sector filed 10,412 patent applications with the office last year, a 67% increase over 2003. The report also notes that medtech patent applications rose year-on-year from 2003 to 2012, while those from the drug and biotech sectors remained relatively unchanged. Thomas Prock, a patent attorney with Marks & Clerk, attributes this increased medtech patent activity to a "vibrant collection" of small firms attempting to bring their innovative products to market.
