Sears has been in the doldrums under Chairman and CEO Eddie Lampert, but not because Lampert is dumb or incompetent. Rather, Adam Hartung argues, it's because Lampert's wedded to stale beliefs and outdated assumptions about how the retail business works. Other bosses can similarly find themselves emotionally and intellectually invested in the status quo. "Are you managing for the needs of changing markets, or working hard to defend doing more of what worked in a bygone era?" Hartung asks.
