Obese patients may not need SPECT MPI prior to bariatric surgery

Researchers who evaluated 383 consecutive stress MPI studies undergone by obese patients as part of preparations for bariatric surgery found that SPECT MPI results were normal for 89% of the patients and equivocal for 6%. Only 5% of the patients had abnormal MPI results, according to the study published in the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology. The findings indicate that SPECT MPI prior to bariatric surgery may not be necessary for all obese patients, said study leader Dr. James Arrighi, a cardiologist with Rhode Island Hospital.
