Gene therapy treats "bubble boy disease," but raises leukemia risk

A 10-year study showed that eight of nine boys with "bubble boy disease," or X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency disease, a rare ailment that keeps the body from developing mature T cells to ward off infections, were able to live normally after undergoing gene therapy. However, four of nine patients developed T-cell acute leukemia after receiving treatment. Three survived while one died.
