5 NIH projects aim to develop treatments for rare diseases

The NIH launched five pilot projects aimed at identifying and testing drug candidates for rare and neglected diseases before they are tried on humans. The projects, which are part of the NIH Therapeutics for Rare and Neglected Diseases program, target treatments for conditions including sickle cell disease and chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
