A misleading snippet of video posted on the BigGovernment website run by right-wing provocateur Andrew Breitbart escalated into a media frenzy last week that ended with the hasty resignation and even hastier rehabilitation of Department of Agriculture official Shirley Sherrod. The racially charged controversy that followed also exposed the process by which stories from Breitbart and other fringe elements wend their way into the mainstream media.
