Hedge funds swell despite weak returns in 2011

Hedge fund managers are struggling to beat the market amid growing economic uncertainty. "Thus far this year, hedge funds are underperforming as they attempt to manage volatility and protect capital against losses," Hennessee Group co-founder Charles Gradante says. Nevertheless, hedge funds' holdings increased to record levels as investors poured $62 billion into the industry during the first two quarters of 2011.
