Classes are counted toward service-learning hours

Some Maryland schools are allowing students to complete service-learning hours in class, upsetting parents who believe projects should be done outside school. Education officials say having service learning at school keeps students focused, allows for more reflection and does not burden community groups with untrained volunteers. Officials say Maryland is the only state with a service-learning requirement for graduation.
