Projects explore new capabilities for underwater robots

Unmanned underwater robots are the objective of 32 teams from around the world competing in the annual International RoboSub Competition sponsored by the Office of Naval Research and the Association of Unmanned Vehicles International Foundation. Such a device could be used to combat terrorism or monitor environmental damage. Meanwhile, the FILOSE project in Europe has developed a swimming robot that seeks out areas where disruptive currents are weakest to find the most efficient course through the water.
