Proposed route for power line opposed by Pentagon, green groups

The Bureau of Land Management's preferred route for the proposed SunZia power line, which would send wind-generated electricity from New Mexico to consumers in Arizona and possibly California, is opposed by both the Department of Defense and some environmentalists. The Pentagon said the suggested route would put a section of the line within an extension area of the White Sands Missile Range, making it a national security threat. Environmentalists said the proposed route would put the line through sensitive wildlife areas, and that SunZia misrepresented its purpose because the line could also be used to deliver power from fossil fuel plants. Donna Hummel, a BLM spokeswoman, said the agency will work with the U.S. Army to address concerns.
