Hospitals offer unique incentives to attract new physicians

Mississippi and Louisiana use loan forgiveness programs to get more new physicians to practice in rural, under-served areas, but hospitals also have local initiatives that encourage doctors to stay. Natchez Regional Medical Center uses temporary internship-type positions to give physicians a chance to practice in an area before committing to a full-time position, and Riverland Medical Center pays physician and staff salaries of a new practice for a year or until the practice can be self-sustaining.
