Industrial Canal lock project moves ahead in New Orleans

The Army Corps of Engineers has resumed construction of the Industrial Canal lock-replacement project in New Orleans after challenges by neighbors and environmental groups delayed the project for two years. The $1.3 billion project will provide wider access for ships into the canal. In May, Corps officials said they would allow the project to proceed because an environmental statement confirmed that a plan to dispose of contaminated materials in a confined disposal facility was safe.
