Macondo spill spawns new rules, spurs consultant market

As lawmakers work to tighten regulations around the U.S. oil industry, jobs for specialty engineers, consultants and inspectors are likely to proliferate. Legislation spawned by the massive Macondo oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico will go beyond equipment reliability to strengthen rules around work processes, worker training, containment technology, among other things -- and third parties will be required to guide and verify compliance with the avalanche of new rules.
