Landscape of pain treatment options could change, researchers say

The use of functional MRI could transform studies of pain and how best to treat it, and researchers are exploring the emotional and psychological aspects of therapies. Harvard Medical School professor Ted Kaptchuk said patients given placebo treatments for irritable bowel syndrome had symptom reductions comparable to those offered by drugs and even reported fewer symptoms when they were told they were getting a sham treatment.
