U.S. economic expansion outstrips forecasts

The U.S. gross domestic product rose 1.7% in the second quarter, higher than what most experts expected. Accelerating consumer spending on durable goods and rising business investment in equipment and construction projects suggest that growth stands a good chance of continuing the rest of the year. The effects of higher taxes and reduced government spending seem to be fading away.
