British heart group debates widespread use of statins

The debate by doctors at the annual meeting of Heart UK, a charity, centered on the issue of whether cholesterol-lowering statins should be put in the water supply or easily available as an answer to the threat of cardiovascular disease. One side argued that statins are safer than aspirin, but others said putting drugs in the water converts people into patients and side effects of statins make them unsuitable for routine use for those with low risk.
