Study: Diabetes increasingly listed as underlying cause of death

Diabetes was listed as an underlying cause of death for 13% of 2,261 patients who died between 2000 and 2007, according to data from the Translating Research into Action for Diabetes trial. Researchers say they found indications that while diabetes was cited more frequently as an underlying cause, its overall frequency among the study group did not increase. "If this trend is indeed occurring on a national level, it may complicate the interpretation of mortality rates ascertained from death certificates," the researchers wrote.
