REIT returns in July were an old story but still a good one for REIT investors, says Brad Case, NAREIT vice president of research and industry information. REITs outperformed the broader stock market, with the FTSE NAREIT Equity REIT Index posting a 9.52% total return for July, compared with 7.01% for the S&P 500. These latest numbers, Case says, highlight the current disconnect between the broader commercial real estate market -- which is still very weak -- and REITs. "REIT investors are looking forward to REITs being able to buy good properties at very favorable prices over the next few years," he said.
