L.A. officials give a preliminary OK to a sidewalk pet-sale ban

The Los Angeles City Council moved forward last week on a measure aimed at curbing sidewalk sales of pets including turtles and bunnies, many of which eventually land in the city's shelters. The ordinance, which will come up for a final vote this week, includes an escalating series of fines for violators.
