New Colo. research facility represents step forward in net-zero energy

The recently opened 222,000-square-foot National Renewable Energy Laboratory's Research Support Facility in Golden, Colo., has demonstrated that large office buildings with many occupants can produce more energy than they use, according to this article. The building utilizes a sensor system that helps ensure net-zero energy usage is maintained, and is designed so that sunlight is able to fill most of the buildings' lighting needs during the day.
