Calif. Bay Bridge: Rod testing, vortex panel installation begins

Work is underway in California to test 13 anchor rods made from the same steel as the snapped bolts on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Testing will take months and simulate a "decades-long corrosion process." Meanwhile, ironworkers are attaching 700 square steel plates to the underside of the bridge to "create a vortex and disrupt the wind flow effect" to counteract the wind forces that caused the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in Washington state to collapse in 1940.
