European Commission approves AA-US Airways merger

European officials approved a proposed merger between American Airlines and US Airways. The European Commission approved the merger on Monday, after the airlines agreed to give up some operating rights at London's Heathrow Airport. “We are very pleased that the EU has approved the merger between American Airlines and US Airways,” AMR chairman and chief executive Tom Horton said. “This represents one of the final milestones on our path to becoming the new American Airlines.”
