EPA faces legal challenge over 2 fracking wastewater-disposal permits

The Environmental Protection Agency has received a petition challenging its approval of two underground injection control permits for wastewater-disposal wells related to a fracking project in Pennsylvania. The petition says there was insufficient examination of potential effects on drinking water, but EPA defended its process. "If underground injection is done in accordance with the UIC program requirements, it is one of the best alternatives available for the disposal of fluids produced in association with oil and gas production activities," EPA said.
