NRC defends relicensing of Vermont Yankee

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission challenged Vermont's filing in federal court that the relicensing of Entergy's Vermont Yankee nuclear plant was illegal because the utility failed to include a water-quality certificate in its application. "The state had an opportunity to raise this issue during the course of the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board hearing on the license renewal application and ... the state has not exhausted its remedies with the NRC before taking this issue to federal court," NRC spokesman Neil Sheehan said in a statement.
