VC-owned firms could receive R&D awards under compromise deal

Small companies owned by venture capital firms would again be eligible for research and development funding from federal agencies under a compromise deal reached in the Senate. The agreement is included in the Small Business Innovation Research reauthorization bill, which the full Senate is expected to approve in September. The SBIR program was designed to support small firms developing biotech innovations to improve health, expand the food supply and create new energy sources, BIO President Jim Greenwood said.
