U.S., Russia team up on mock international kidnapping exercise

In a precedent-setting exercise, U.S. and Russian military forces teamed up this week on a mission to see how well the two could coordinate in response to an international kidnapping. In the exercise, called Vigilant Eagle, a chartered Gulfstream passenger jet played the role of a hijacked airliner heading west across the Pacific from Alaska and into Russian airspace. Fighter jets from the North American Aerospace Defense Command and from Russia were sent to chase it. A reverse maneuver also was conducted, heading from Russia to the U.S.
