Seniors groups see uptick in pension "recoupment" cases

Senior advocacy groups say the number of "recoupment" cases in which companies look to collect repayment for overpaid pensions from retired employees or surviving spouses by reducing or cutting off payments is growing. Advocates say they spend a third of their time working on recoupment cases, when a few years ago they rarely saw them. "Retirees are often confused and shocked to learn that their pension plan overpaid them," says Justin Freeborn, a lawyer with the Western States Pension Assistance Project.
