CIO stresses importance of regional HIEs in patient data storage

The U.S. government should prioritize the creation of and funding for regional health information exchange networks because these statewide systems are gatekeepers in patient data storage and maintenance, Wendy Frieling writes in Modern Healthcare. Frieling, who serves as chief information officer and vice president of Newton Memorial Hospital in New Jersey, suggests that the HIT Policy Committee establish a reimbursement system to support the implementation of regional HIEs and bolster efficiency in hospitals and physician practices.
