It's widely thought that Republicans are out of step with public opinion and need a makeover to win back the White House -- but the data don't actually support that view, writes Sean Trende. It's likely the GOP's fortunes actually reflect the interplay between congressional and presidential politics, with parties tending to do better in Congress when they don't hold the White House. "Even if the Republican Party were to position itself better to begin winning the presidency, it would probably find itself losing Congress and the state legislatures in relatively short order," Trende writes.
