Pentagon extends benefits to same-sex spouses

The Pentagon announced this week that same-sex spouses of military members will soon be eligible for the same health care, retirement and housing benefits as opposite-sex couples. "It is now the department's policy to treat all married military personnel equally," Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told senior Pentagon officials in a memo Wednesday. The policy change, which takes effect Sept. 3, permits unmarried personnel in same-sex relationships to take up to 10 days of paid leave to travel to a state that grants marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
