IOM: Involving patients as partners will save money, improve care

An Institute of Medicine report has called on the health care industry to involve patients in their medical care as partners rather than customers, saying that doing so is essential to reducing costs and improving care quality. The report noted there are infrastructural and cultural challenges involved with the shift, but the authors said widespread change is essential.
