Utilities up their maintenance game a decade after Northeast outage

Remedies ranging from technology upgrades to new directives on tree trimming are the result of the enormous grid blackout that spread across eastern Michigan and much of the Northeast 10 years ago. A tree touching a power line in Ohio led to the massive outage, which led to a new focus on maintenance initiatives and procedures. Still, a federal report notes, the costs of outages across the U.S. amount to as much as $33 billion a year.
