Babies born with certain structural birth defects that were not caused by chromosomal abnormalities had a twofold increased risk of developing cancer, including neuroblastoma, retinoblastoma and hepatoblastoma, before age 15 than those without defects, a study showed. However, the overall odds of getting cancer among children with nonchromosomal birth defects, such as cleft palate and eye defects, remained relatively low, researchers wrote in the journal PLOS One.
