Are smart cities really a smart idea?

Cities that respond to people in an almost organic fashion may be just around the corner, with lighting that reacts to human presence and driverless cars that quickly find parking spaces, writes Jane Wakefield, pointing to several projects around the world. However, the race to make cities smarter may be making a mistake in leaving residents out of the planning, she cautions.
