The "Switch 4 Good" program was piloted in the spring in more than 3,900 military homes as part of the Smart Grid Data Access Award from the Department of Energy. Each home used smart meters and three personalized sets of conservation tools to gauge energy usage, conserve consumption and save on bills. A Web-based portal displayed real-time energy usage and lowered usage as well as energy bills. The technology could be useful to help home builders and promote their homes with the system as a selling feature, the author suggests.
