Report focuses on teaching young dual language learners

English language learners in preschool and early elementary school should learn in settings that use both English and their native language, according to Linda M. Espinosa, an early childhood and dual language expert. Evidence shows students who maintain two languages tend to perform better academically, but finding enough bilingual teachers to teach dual language programs can be a challenge, Espinosa notes in a recently published research review and policy brief. In the report, she offers suggestions that monolingual teachers can use in their classrooms to support dual language learners.
