IRS mail audits are often mishandled, TIGTA finds

A growing number of taxpayers are complaining about how they have been treated during Internal Revenue Service audits by mail, and the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration has found that taxpayers have every right be unhappy. The results reported by the IRS are "inaccurate and overstated" and taxpayers are often improperly assessed taxes that they don't really owe, a TIGTA report said.
