GE subsidiary seeks approval to build laser-enrichment facility

GE-Hitachi's Global Laser Enrichment unit is requesting the federal government's approval to develop a $1 billion facility that will use lasers to enrich uranium for nuclear plants. The plant would be capable of enriching uranium for as many as 60 large reactors every year, said Christopher J. Monetta, president of GLE. The laser-enrichment venture will also promote energy security "since it is a domestic source," he added.
